Tucson landscape - no textStudies show that immersing oneself in the creation of art has great benefits for your general wellness and can even help slow the aging process. Don’t know where to begin? Join Catherine Bickford in Tucson this February and choose one or more of your favorite mediums offered in six in-depth, but easy to follow classes. From mixed media to jewelry making, Catherine will demonstrate how to incorporate color and symbolism to bring personal meaning to one’s jewelry and other art. This is the fifth year that she will be teaching at the Tucson Bead Show. The 2015 event takes place at the Radisson Suites Tucson Hotel and runs from February 2nd through the 7th.

Collage & Mixed Media: Part One on Thursday, February 5th, 2015

Collage-Mixed-Media-Part-OneYou will learn the basics of collage including how to distress with color wash and glazing, and how to create textured effects with stencils and patinas. You will get an overview of what tools and materials are needed for collage including how to create an image transfer into medium and gesso.

Collage-Mixed-Media-Part-TwoThis class offers in depth instruction on to incorporate beads, chain, and charms into your mixed media jewelry. Learn how to create beautiful embellishments along with collage techniques such as such as distressing with color wash and glazing, creating textured effects with stencils and masks, as well as advanced techniques such as image transfer, and transparent layering techniques. Learn wire-wrapping techniques that will be used to enhance your jewelry with beaded elements and charms.

Drilling & Wire-Wrapping Sea Glass: Part One on Friday, February 6th, 2015

Drilling-and-Wire-Wrapping-Seaglass-OneThis class provides an in-depth introduction to the art of drilling glass. You will begin by learning the steps to drilling glass, including what type of drill and drill bits to use, plus how to keep the drill cool. You will also learn basic wire-wrapping techniques that will allow you to make elegant pendants and earrings.

Drilling & Wire-Wrapping Sea Glass: Part Two on Friday, February 6th, 2015

Drilling-and-Wire-Wrapping-Seaglass-TwoIn this class you will learn simple metalsmithing methods to create sophisticated jewelry. You will begin by learning the steps to drilling glass including what type of drill and drill bits to use and how to keep the drill cool. Once you have mastered drilling, you will create dramatic textured findings for your drilled treasures by hammering and shaping silver filled round wire with forging tools. You will learn how to make your own custom ear wires and bails.

Creating Talismans: Part One on Saturday, February 7th, 2015

Embossed-Pendants1Have you ever wondered why you gravitate toward the same color palettes? Would you like to know what it means when certain images continually show up in your art? In this class you will learn the meanings of various colors and symbols and then incorporate them into your very own “talisman” or good luck charm.

Creating Talismans: Part Two on Saturday, February 7th, 2015

Talismans-2Building on what you learned about symbols and colors in Creating Talismans: Part One, this class covers the healing and uplifting properties of gemstones, such as carnelian, turquoise, amethyst, and citrine. We will work with a wide variety of materials and processes, while learning the secret meanings of colors, symbols, and gemstones. You will combine beads, chain, charms and stones in to a personal talisman or good luck charm. We will work with the Vintaj texturing metal system to experiment with texture and metal patinas, allowing you to add gorgeous, layered color and then combine your embellishments using wire-wrapping and simple forging techniques.
