This July and September, Portland, Maine artist, Elizabeth Prior will be teaching two wonderful Art Escape weekends geared towards taking your jewelry designing skills to the next level!
Elizabeth’s July 15-17th Art Escape will focus on jewelry design. During this weekend you will be introduced to Elizabeth and her work. Through her teachings you will learn how to go beyond store-bought findings and design and make your own headpins, clasps, jumprings and earwires. Learn ways to create unique and gorgeous jewelry findings without soldering. This is the perfect class to take if you are bored with store bought pieces, and need some new, creative ways to make your pieces! The best part is that once you feel you’ve mastered creating your own findings, join Elizabeth on September 30th- October 2nd for her Art Escape “Soldering at the Kitchen Table.” Learn to cut, file, form, solder and finish a ring from metal in addition to learning how to work a basic plumbers torch to create chains, headpins, and other findings. Elizabeth will also show you how to metal stamp your pieces for a lovely custom touch! You’ll walk away with new skills, and hopefully some inspiration excitement to create!

This June we are so excited to have Donna Downey join us at the Studios teaching the Simply Irresistible Surfaces Art Escape® weekend! At Artascope Studios there are many different formats of art classes that you can take to satisfy your creative needs. Art Escape® creative getaways are weekend-long classes in a special topic. They cover a unique variety of subjects from stained glass to metalsmithing, painting to collage. All Art Escape® art classes are suitable for complete beginners as well as advanced artists. The classes are taught by professional artists who will guide you through this enriching experience; providing you with the right tools, materials and instruction so that you can step right into the art making process.
This June in Donna’s class you will take your artistic skills far beyond your imagination as you create a journal or scrapbook that will result in layers of dimension and interest. Working on canvas, you will learn the process of painting, stamping, resist techniques and embellishing with texture for your journal or card making. This is an exploration in melding the best of the techniques and applications of the paper world with the best of the fabric world!
Donna Downey is a bestselling author, instructor and all-around creative force in the crafting industry. From working as a popular columnist for Simple Scrapbooks magazine, to traveling the world inspiring women to push the boundaries of their own creativity, to developing her first fabric scrapbooking line with Prima, Donna is consistently on the leading edge of all things cool related to memory preservation art.
In September another fun artist is coming to teach with us; Claudine Hellmuth is coming to teach Beeswax Collage! She will show you how to create a collage entirely with beeswax – you don’t have to us other glues or adhesives! You’ll learn about beeswax transfers, stamping in wax, layering collage, glazing colors and other collage techniques too! The cool thing with this class is that “mistakes” can not really be made with beeswax. If you don’t like the placement of your papers you can remove them – even months later – and easily adjust your artwork! You’ll be amazed by how easy and fun beeswax collage can be!
Claudine Hellmuth is a nationally recognized collage artist, author and illustrator. Her artworks have been featured on The Martha Stewart Show, in Mary Engelbreit’s Home Companion magazine, The New York Times, on HGTV’s “I Want That!” and on the DIY Network’s program, “Craft Lab.” In addition to creating her artwork full-time, Claudine teaches collage workshops in the US & Canada, and she has written 2 books about her techniques, “Collage Discovery Workshop” and “Collage Discovery Workshop: Beyond the Unexpected.” She has also produced three instructional DVD workshops.

Check out our April Art Night Out® schedule! We have been inspired by all of the new ideas Catherine brought back from her exciting trip to the Craft and Hobby Association (CHA) show this year. At the CHA show artists from around the world gather to share ideas and inspiration. Artascope Studios founder Catherine Bickford went to the CHA and the Gem Show in Tucson, AZ and learned about new materials and techniques that now we get to incorporate into classes at Artascope this spring.
Art Night Out® classes are all about personalization and showing the world how exceptionally unique we are. This April you can learn how to use collage to make personally meaningful art in the Collage Resin Pendant class. Or create a story with a necklace that will be 100% yours as you learn wire working techniques and add charms, findings and beads. Personalize your cell phone or i-pod with the felted cover, or create your own rubber stamps and make everything from your grocery list to party invitations personalized with your own seal. Check out the whole list of Art Night Out® classes start to personalize your life!
Some of the the national artists that Catherine met at the CHA show are coming to Maine and you can take Art Escape® classes from them at Artascope this year. Donna Downey comes in June to teach “Simply Irresistible Surfaces”, in September Claudine Hellmuth teaches “Beeswax Collage” and Catherine Matthews-Scanlon teaches “Sewn Paper Cards” in November. There are Art Escape® classes every month with great teachers, like Gina Lee Kim’s Watercolor Class in the Summer and Fall, and Bethany Haeseler teaching “Stained Glass with Fusing Techniques” this April. Visit the Art Escape® website to see all of the classes!

Our Summer Artist Series Session just started! One class we love to pop in with is the Wednesday evening Metalsmithing class.
Many of the students in this class have been working with the teacher, Clint Fulkerson, and each other, for well over a year. It has been great addition to our Artist Series line up! New students also have enjoyed joining the class and getting lots of different perspectives of what they can do in the medium!
From learning the basics of metalsmithing with ring making, stone setting and other techniques, students are able to grow and expand their skills. Students in the class, like Kelley and Gretchen love making jewelry, whether it be pendants or rings. Sheri’s ring is beautiful and is one of her earlier projects! Jim often makes jewerly items as well, but also explore more scuptural elements of metalsmithing.
Whether you are curious, need a refreshed or a teacher’s guidance to pull together your inspirations, Metalsmithing at Artascope is HOT!
Our Summer Session runs until the end of August. Starting up September 16th, Clint will again be teaching Metalsmithing on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9pm! Clint will also be teaching in our ArtEscape! workshop format, these are three day weekend intensives.

Over the past couple of weeks, folks have been signing up for Stained Glass like crazy! Gayle is a phenomenally talented teacher, who had been teaching with us for years, that we totally understand why people just can’t get enough of Gayle! She always goes above and beyond for students in her classes!
We had Lorrie and Alex join us for an ArtEscape! Weekend to explore and develop their stained glass skills! Lorrie had found several items that had belonged to her father, and they inspired her to sign up for the weekend. Her friend, Alex, joined right in, ready for her own exploration into Stained Glass
The gals definitely had a blast with Gayle as they worked from patters and dove into our collection of glass shard and sheets to find the perfect colors to complete their pieces. Lorrie made a beautiful seascape wreath and Alex was inspired by a sunrise design! They worked intensely over their weekend! We were so proud of their results!
Lorrie enjoyed her weekend with us so much that she, “wanted to say thank you for all the support this past weekend as Alex & I learned a lot in our introduction to stained glass.”
And just the other night, Gayle returned for more Stained Glass, this time as an Art Night Out, one night all inclusive workshops where participants designed their own stunning Stained Glass Panels!
It was a fun group, mixed with a husband and wife enjoying a night to themselves, a mother and daughter for a surprise Mother’s Day treat, an fellow Artascope teacher, and some new Artascope friends! The guys in the class were able to quickly find their inspiration and complete beautiful panels that blew everyone away. The folks that came with people they knew were fun to watch as they inspired each other throughout the class to design their own fabulous stained glass panels!
Looking to learn about Stained Glass? Gayle will be teaching a 6 week Artist Series starting next week. May 6 through June 10th from 10am to 1pm. Looking for just a taste? Our next Stained Glass Art Night Out will be offered Saturday May 9th from 2 to 6pm.

PMC ArtEscape Weekend with Ann Liller-
Every third weekend at Artascope Studios, we run a weekend intensive. It’s our ArtEscape Series. In May, our PMC guru, Ann Liller, taught a very packed PMC, Precious Metal Clay, ArtEscape intensive to 8 students. Friday night is the kick off from 6-9pm. It just happened to be Ann’s birthday….not a bad way to spend your day. I am sure there were a few wine glasses used and treats to celebrate the beginning of the weekend adventures!
Students learned about the properties of Precious Metal Clay and started experimenting immediately. The three day format allows them time to work out designs, investigate and invent new ways to play.
Ann had just returned from her PMC certification weekend and had lots of new and exciting techniques to share with her eager audience. Saturday is a full day from 9am-6pm. Lunch is on us as students work through their longest day. The weekend is finished off with a half day on Sunday 10am-2pm. Students are welcome to stay until 7pm Sunday to finish up their projects and have time to share their experience of the weekend class. Many times, members and stewards will stop by over the bustling weekend to check out the progress and see the dramatic results.
