Retirement Party Ideas & Themes

You’ve worked your whole life for this moment– you deserve a party! Retirement parties are a great way to commemorate your working years and ring in the next chapter of life.

So if you’re planning a bash, you’ve come to the right place. This article has 150 retirement party ideas and themes to get you celebrating!

Retirement Party Ideas

Retiring is a right of passage and deserves a celebration. Whether you want a quick lunch or a grand bash, this list has plenty of ideas to get you started.

1. Memory Slideshow

Memory slideshows are the perfect backdrop at a retirement party. Compile photos from the retiree’s workdays that represent the journey they’ve had until now. Many programs will create a photo video independently– you just need to choose the pictures and add some simple text.

Make sure to gather the photos ahead of time. Send an email to the invitees asking them for any pictures they may have taken over the years. Don’t forget to include the retiree’s family as well!

2. Tribute Video

A tribute video is a great way to honor the retiree– and give them a memorable gift. The tribute can combine photos, video clips, and messages. Having coworkers and family comment on the retirement.

Another option is to have a video stand at the retirement party. Have guests pop by and say their wishes for the retiree.

3. Farewell Memory Book

Farewell Memory Book

A memory book is a classic retirement gift. Think of a scrapbook with pictures, important milestones, and individual notes. It will take some time and creativity, but the sentiment is priceless.

Reach out to the retiree’s close friends, family, and colleagues to write letters. The retiree is sure to be touched by the heartfelt gesture.

4. Karaoke

Who said retirements had to be quiet? Spice up the party with some fun karaoke hits. Choose work-related songs like Dolly Parton’s “9-5” or the Bangles’ “Manic Monday.”

You can rent a karaoke bar for the event or set up your own entertainment. Make sure to get a microphone, speakers, and screen for the singing celebration!

5. Retirement Piñata

Nothing rings in retirement like smashing a themed piñata! A piñata related to the specific job will get some laughs. A teacher’s apple or a construction truck would work.

If you can’t find work-inspired piñatas, grab an alarm clock one! The retiree won’t need it and can take pleasure in smashing it to bits.

6. DIY Photo Booth

DIY photo booths are a hit at almost any party. Create a thematic backdrop, add some props, and set up a camera stand.

The retiree’s career can inspire backdrops and props. A police officer’s hat and cuffs or a doctor’s stethoscope will make for some fun photo ops. If you want to focus on the future, create those retirement vibes with beach hats and daiquiri drinks.

7. Golf Tournament

Golf Tournament

Although it’s a cliche, many retirees do love golf! If your dad’s one of them, head to the golf course to celebrate. He’ll feel appreciated and have a fabulous day on the greens.

However, a gold tournament can be costly. If you’re looking for a low to mid-range budget party, consider having a golf-themed retirement celebration at home. Green decor and a golf ball basket centerpiece should do the trick.

8. Picnic

Picnics are a cheap and cheerful choice for any occasion! Getting outside on a sunny day is an activity in itself. Post up in a park for kids to play and people to toss a ball around.

A park is an excellent location with built-in picnic tables, but you should get there early to claim a section. You can combine it with a potluck to lower costs and prep time.

9. Tea Party

Does your mother love tea parties? While still low-budget, tea parties feel like a fancy affair. A tea party makes an excellent choice for a mother’s retirement celebration.

You’ll need a variety of tea, mini sandwiches, and lots of cookies served on your fanciest china. Colorful macaroons on a tiered stand make an excellent choice for high tea. Don’t forget to decorate with flowers and table pieces!

10. Barbecue

A classic barbecue never gets old. Plus, retirees should become familiar with that backyard barbecue!

Think burgers, hot dogs, and potato salad. Outdoor seating with red and white tablecloths and flower-filled masons jars can serve as decor. Even if you’re supplying all the food and drinks, this party should be in the low to mid-range budget.

11. Surprise Party

Surprise Party

Surprise! The retiree knows about their retirement, but they don’t know about the celebration! A surprise party is a great way to make someone feel special.

If your parent is retiring soon, give them the send-off they deserve by gathering all their colleagues and loved ones. Combine the surprise with themes like a bowling night, boat party, or barbecue.

12. Rooftop Bar

Once you hit retirement, you’ve come out on top. So why not take the celebration to the top as well?

Rooftop bars are a great venue for retirement parties. You have the people, drinks, food, and a beautiful view. It’s also easy to combine with a surprise party to wow the retiree.

13. Skating Rink

You’re never too old to throw on some skates and hit the rink! A skating rink is an excellent venue for parties because it has enough space to host many people and usually has separate party rooms. Food is already available, and you’re welcome to bring your own cake.

14. Bucket List Party

So you’ve finally retired– it’s time to work on that bucket list! A bucket list party is a great way to celebrate all you wish to accomplish during retirement. Have guests write ideas and hang them up for everyone to see.

Use buckets of all shapes and sizes for decor and to display food. Turn the top bucket list items into a cake.

15. Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras

There’s no such thing as overdecorating when it comes to Mardi Gras, so include lots of feathers, beads, balloons, masks, and more! Stick to the classic Mardi Gras colors; green, yellow, and purple.

Gift everyone mardi gras beads when they enter. At a specific time during the party, encourage speeches or well wishes, and have each guest pass their beads onto the retiree.

16. A Royal Retirement

A retiree deserves to be king or queen for the day. So throw them a royalty-themed party!

Royal blue and gold rule this color scheme, and don’t forget to crown the guest of honor. Get a note-worthy cake and customized party decor with the retiree’s name. This party is sure to give them a royal sendoff.

17. Gone Fishin’

If your retiree loves fishing, why not start the party with a fishing theme? A wooden “Gone fishin’” sign can introduce the guests at the entrance. As people enter, they can ‘catch a fish’ by writing bucket list ideas on fish-shaped cards and adding them to the bucket.

For food, you can have everything fish related; Goldfish and Swedish Fish as silly snacks or fish-shaped pizza bites and crab dip as heartier options.

18. Happy Retirement Website

Perhaps some guests can’t make the event, or you’re having a virtual party. If so, a retirement website is an excellent way for people to write congratulations, send gifts, or leave their contact information. It can also be a great spot for people to add pictures or suggest ideas for hobbies.

19. The Office Oscars

The Office Oscars

Retirement is an occasion to remember. What better than to have an Office Oscars. However, instead of watching the Oscars, you’ll be participating in them.

A host can create awards such as “Best Gossip at the Office” or “Best Casual Friday Attire.” Have coworkers vote on who gets what– but make sure to make a special plaque for the retiree’s award.

20. Escape Room

The retiree will soon escape work, but can they free themselves from an escape room? Grab a small team and head to the escape room of your choice. Different venues have various themes, so opt for one that best fits your retiree’s personality.

21. Sweet Endings Potluck

At this potluck, everyone brings something sweet! Encourage variety with your guests’ options; cupcakes, pies, or a fruit platter. Have some tasty lemonade and sweet cocktails ready to go.

As people enter, they can sign a guestbook with their sweetest memory of the retiree. It’s sure to be a sweet ending to a lifelong career.

22. Scavenger Hunt

Scavenger hunts are a great team-building activity and a way to say goodbye to fellow staff! Paty companies can do all the legwork and organize the hunt for you, or you can create your own.

Include targets related to the retiree’s career. For example, if they were a salesperson, one item could be to “Sell a used pencil to a stranger for cash.” Make sure to gather for an afterparty to mingle and announce the winners!

23. Custom Retirement Box

Custom Retirement Box

As an office prank, bring a giant cardboard box of stuff the retiree “forgot” at the office. When they open it, they’ll be surprised to find a gift box full of personalized goodies and cards from everyone at the office.

24. Brewery

Breweries make excellent venues for retirement parties– assuming the guest of honor enjoys beer! They are spacious and airy, creating a refreshing environment for congratulations and farewells.

The entertainment, food, and drinks are built into the venue. Your group can take a guided brewery tour, have a beer tasting, or share some flights.

25. Bridge Tournament

Playing bridge is a cliche in the senior citizen world. However, it’s a fun game and a silly way to prepare your retiree for older age. You’ll need several square tables and decks of cards.

People can pair up and play in groups of four. Then, winners play winners, and losers play losers. Create a chart to track who wins each round and which team will be crowned the tournament champions.

26. Trivia

Create a trivia based on the retiree. This quiz will take some time and insider knowledge— so make sure you know your guest of honor well. Consider including categories like “The Younger Years”, “Likes and Dislikes,” and “Work Life.”

Have everyone split up into groups or work with their table. You’ll need a loud speaking voice or microphone and paper and pencils. Don’t forget a prize for the winning team!

27. Fortune Teller Party

Fortune Teler Party

What will the retiree’s future look like? It’s anyone’s guess!

At this party, everyone will look to the future. Guests can write ideas about the retiree’s future life and add them to a prediction jar. Decorate with Magic 8 balls and hire a fortune teller to answer those mysterious questions.

28. Bingo Night

There’s no way to ring in retirement like Bingo Night! Bingo is a classic senior citizen’s game. Whether they play or not, this theme will get a laugh from the crowd.

Bingo can be played in person and on Zoom. It’s so simple anyone can play!

29. Retirement Paperwork

Instead of having everyone sign cards at work, have them type something sweet on the office stationery. When you print it all out, put it in a manila envelope. While you’ll present it as “uncompleted retirement paperwork,” the retiree will be happy to find heartfelt letters instead.

30. Zoo

It’s a retirement party gone wild! Zoos make suitable venues for parties because the entertainment is all around you. Some zoos also have safari jeep tours or private animal feedings.

Zoos have special areas and packages for parties, so you’ll need to book ahead. With packages, you’ll need a mid-range budget. Besides that, the prep is minimal, so you can enjoy being party animals!

31. Paint & Sip Party

Paint & Sip Party

For the artsy types, paint-and-sip parties are perfect. It’s a calm, creative way to ring in retirement.

Many art studios offer private events, or you can bring the party to you. Either way, expect a mid-to-high price, including all the wine, light snacks, and art supplies.

32. Pool Party

If you have a pool and the weather is right, throw a pool party! This is an excellent way to cool down and celebrate in a low-pressure environment.

Pool parties can be combined with potlucks, barbecues, or even a surprise party. Make sure to have lots of shaded areas and cold beverages on hand.

33. Wine Tasting

Is your retiree a wine connoisseur? If they are, they’ll love wine tasting– and if they’re not, they can learn!

Wine tasting is a sophisticated way to sip and celebrate. It can take place at a winery or bar, or you can hire a professional to host at the office. Plus, it’s the perfect opportunity to toast to the retiree.

34. Farm

Farms make a beautiful, rustic setting for a retirement party. Many farms offer party packages, including dining and activities such as horseback riding and petting zoos.

If you want to bring extra snacks, consider some pigs in a blanket and Rice Krispie treat “hay bales.”

35. Dinner Party

Dinner Party

Dinner parties never go out of style. They work best for more intimate groups; 6-12 people is ideal.

You can have the food catered or cook yourself; the cost will depend on how fancy you go. Make sure to have something special, like gifts and a cake, to honor the retiree.

36. Retiree Roast

Put your retiree in the hot seat! Get ready to joke and laugh all night–at the expense of the retiree, of course.

You can hire a comedian to host or do the honors yourself. Encourage participation and give people a heads-up so they can prepare their material.

37. Custom Retiree Faces

To make these custom faces, you’ll need to print out life-sized pictures of the retiree’s face (preferably with different expressions). Then, glue them to sticks for some silly photo fun.

When the whole group takes photos, they can hold up their sticks– the room will be full of the retiree! While this idea is a bit creepy, it will get some laughs.

38. Death to the Commute Party

After retirement, you’ll never have to commute again. Now that’s something to celebrate!

A Death to the Commute Party theme can be decorated with toy cars and a roadmap tablecloth. The color scheme can be red, yellow, and green, like a traffic light. Consider having a car pinata so you can officially smash it!

39. Great Gatsby Theme

Great Gatsby Theme

The Great Gatsby is all about elegance. Think flappers, suits, and champagne flutes.

Black, white, and gold decor and some sexy jazz music rule this theme. Crab cakes, cheese platters, and other finger foods are perfect for a 20s affair. You can also adorn the tables with feather-filled vases and pearls to tie them all together.

40. Support a Charity

Consider a philanthropic affair to celebrate your working years. The retiree can choose an event–or create their own–that aligns with their beliefs and encourage everyone to participate.

Some charity ideas could include a local walk to raise money or a canned goods drive. You can also have guests donate to a cause rather than buy gifts.

41. Senior Citizen Party

If the retiree has a sense of humor about aging, throw them a senior citizen party.

Invite guests to your ‘early bird affair’ full of cheesy senior cliches. Have some crosswords, sudoku, and cards for fun. Consider creating a photo booth with silly props like reading glasses and knitting needles.

42. You’re Fired!

Did the guest of honor retire– or were they actually fired? Either way, it’s time to celebrate! Play on the theme by having fire decor everywhere.

Red and orange balloons and crepe paper, and some spicy red foods inspire the fire element. If you have a high budget, consider hiring a fire dancer for entertainment.

43. Bowling Night

Bowling Night

Bowling is a fun, medium-budget activity fun for all skill levels. Make sure to reserve enough lanes ahead of time– or rent out the whole alley if you have a large group.

Bowling alleys usually have cheap food and drinks, but consider bringing some of your own snacks to add to the party. Depending on the group size, this should be a medium to higher budget activity.

44. The Ultimate Graduation Party

This theme is a great choice to celebrate a right of passage, especially for teachers. After all, you are graduating from your work life to retirement– it’s the ultimate graduation!

Black and gold are traditional grad colors. Get a black cape and cap for the retiree to wear in some funny photos. Top off the theme with a graduation cap cake.

45. Beach Theme

Once you’re retired, you may want to hit the beach! So why not start early with a beach-themed party?

Umbrellas in tropical drinks, beach buckets of beer, and colorful ‘swim’ donuts set the mood. Sprinkle seashells and sea glass as table decor. Plus, if you lay some beach hats out, people can hopefully get festive and take photos.

46. Good Riddance Party

Let your retiree know you won’t miss them with a comically themed party. A big ‘Good Riddance” banner should do the job. Additionally, sarcastic farewell balloons on Amazon have funny messages like “FINE. GO.” and “We were just starting to like you.”

This theme is excellent for that sassy coworker who doesn’t like sentimental stuff but still wants to celebrate!

47. 80s Theme

80s Theme

Everyone loves an 80s theme. Grab those bright leggings and tie a high ponytail to get into the mood. Costumes should be encouraged— and guests can come in punk rock attire, neon ski suits, or shoulder-padded blazers.

80s snacks are always fun; pop rocks, twinkies, and anything with ranch dressing. Throw on some 80s music and have a lip-syncing or air-guitar battle to celebrate this period in time.

48. Retirement Retreat

A retirement retreat is a peaceful way to celebrate this momentous time. Opt for a seaside getaway or a ski resort, depending on the time of year and location.

Of course, you’ll need to find a place big enough to host all your guests, which will be on the pricey side. However, with a beautiful backdrop and bonding experience, you will remember the occasion.

49. Taboo

Taboo is a fun, wholesome party game for all ages. Plus, it can be played online or in person.  Download the app or find it on Zoom to play easily.

This word-guessing game has you splitting up into two teams. Guess as many target words as possible in one minute without saying a list of taboo words. The players may get a bit rowdy, but they will have fun!

50. Hawaii Theme

Hopefully, the retired guests will make their way to Hawaii to celebrate, but until then, throw them a Hawaii-themed party!

Retirees love Hawaiian-themed shirts, so encourage your guests to wear one for the occasion.  Give a lei to each guest as they enter. Decorate with pineapples, flowers, and coconuts for a natural but easy vibe.

51. Sailing Theme

Sailing Theme

It’s time to set sail for retirement! Sailing fans will enjoy this nautical theme full of blue and white stripes. The retiree can don a sailor’s hat with “Captain Retirement.”

Some games could involve tug-of-war or a treasure hunt to find something hidden at the party. Guests can write messages in a bottle for the retiree.

52. Masquerade Party

Masquerade parties give people creative freedom while still maintaining a solid theatrical theme. These events tend to be fancier, so let guests know to dress more formally.

For decor, think glitzy, mysterious, and sexy. While you can host in the office or home, renting a fun venue like a Victorian-era event space or an art gallery would fit the theme well.

53. Personalized Retirement Plaque

A beautiful gift to commemorate someone’s work years is a personalized plaque. It’s something the retiree can display and take pride in going forward. Make sure to include their name, career, and working years.

Present this gift to the retiree at their party during a heartfelt speech. They are sure to appreciate it!

54. Crossword Puzzle

Once retired, people have enough time to complete the daily crossword. However, they are fun for all ages!

If your mom or dad is the one retiring, chances are you know a lot about them. Create a personalized crossword in their honor. Print it out and pass them out at the party to see who knows the retiree best!

55. Disco Night

Disco Night

A disco party is all about the music and lights. Disco balls and some strobe lights set the mood, along with a DJ or playlist of all your favorite 70s tunes. Recommend that guests wear their favorite disco attire and get ready to boogie!

56. This Is Your Life

This Is Your Life was a 50s TV show surprising celebrities with a run-through of their entire lives. If your mom or dad is retiring, why not celebrate them with the same experience? Recount their life from birth to now with pictures, stories, and surprise guest appearances.

A slideshow, a table full of memorabilia, and a photo timeline work well for this. While this presentation only requires a low budget, you’ll need to prepare ahead of time and reach out to friends and family.

57. Polaroid/Disposable Cameras

Although everyone has smartphones with cameras, there is something special about capturing a candid moment. Set out a Polaroid and disposable cameras around the party so guests can snap away. Consider setting up a DIY photo booth to encourage photography.

Once they’re developed, you’ll have a beautiful scrapbook of unedited moments and memories.

58. Travel Theme

Oh, the places you’ll go! Once retired, you may want to travel the world, so what better way to start retirement than with a travel theme? Party invites can be boarding tickets with the time, date, and location of take-off.

Each party table can be a different continent with representative centerpieces. International cuisine, maps, and vintage suitcases make excellent themed decor. Guests can also pin their suggested travel destination on the map.

59. Year They Were Hired

Year They Were Hired

This throw-back takes you all to the year the retiree was hired! Display pictures and memorabilia of their early days at the company.

If they started working in the 80s, include decor from this time frame. It’ll be a blast from the past to commemorate just how far they’ve come.

60. TGIF (Forever)

Throw the retiree a party on their last Friday EVER. It’ll be TGIFF, or thank God it’s Friday Forever!

Display the TGIF letters, provide drinks and snacks, and play your best Friday-inspired music. Let the guests let loose by dancing or playing games. This theme can be combined with board game nights and retiree trivia.

61. Memory Jar

A memory jar is an excellent addition to any retirement party. You can invest as little or as much as you’d like. You can decorate it with fancy lettering or simply find an empty container around the house.

Have guests write their favorite memories and place them inside. By the end of the party, it’ll be filled with sweet reminders of the retiree’s work life.

62. Flashmob

Flashmobs require a good deal of prep and choreography. You’ll need a committed group meet to practice and keep the surprise under wraps.

When you’re finally ready to perform, choose the right moment and venue to surprise your retiree. Opt for a song that reflects their retirement, such as “Hit the Road Jack” or “I Gotta Feeling.”

63. Goodbye Puzzle Card (everyone signs, then breaks apart, gifts, and have to construct in free time)

Goodbye Puzzle Card

This gift is inexpensive but a creative replacement for congratulations cards. Custom-made puzzles can be easily found online. Get one big enough for everyone to write their messages.

Make sure to break it all apart so the retiree must construct it to see their wishes.

64. Virtual Happy Hour

If you can’t go to the bar, have it come to you! With a virtual happy hour, you can stay home but still enjoy the festivities.

In your work life, you’ve probably experienced some happy hours. This one can be extra special since it may be your last! Buy your favorite beer and make some toasts.

65. Bet on the Crowd

Bet on the Crowd is an online game that works well for virtual parties and happy hours. It’s free on Zoom and doesn’t take much effort to understand.

Simply pose a question like “coffee or tea?” and guess what the crowd prefers. Everyone’s answers will show up so you can see how well you know your fellow partygoers.

66. Speeches

Whether online or in-person, speeches are an essential part of a ceremony. Depending on the space, you may need a microphone.

Give your guests a heads-up that speeches are an option. They can prepare something special to commemorate the retiree. As an added gift, film all the speeches and compile a video to remember the occasion.

67. Never Have I Ever Bingo

Never Have I Ever Bingo

Are you looking for ways to get the party started? Try a Never-Have-I-Ever bingo.

Plug ideas into a Bingo sheet. For example, “Traveled outside the country” or “Been late to work.” Mingle and find guests who fit the bill fastest!

68. Fireworks

Go out with a bang! Fireworks are the perfect way to mark a special occasion. Although expensive, they get everyone excited and will not be forgotten.

Fireworks are best for outdoor events in the evening, such as a late barbecue or boat party. You’ll need to arrange this well ahead of time and make sure it’s legal in your area.

69. Boat Party

If you live by a lake or the ocean, why not celebrate on a boat? You can cruise into retirement in style.

Many boats offer party packages with catering included. Make sure the ship can accommodate the guest count— and that everyone dresses for the boat weather!

70. R.I.P

Is your retiree into humor and spooky themes? R.I.P. stands for Retire in Peace, of course!

Although slightly morbid, this party is a funny and frightful affair that can include eerie decor like ghosts, skeletons, and black balloons. A tombstone with the retiree’s work years is crucial to the theme. Consider including some silly snacks like worms in dirt or coffin-shaped sandwiches.

71. Restaurant

Restaurant

Host a retirement party at one of your favorite restaurants. You already know you like the food and won’t have to worry about much planning.

Depending on the restaurant and the number of guests, it will require a mid to high budget. You may also want to opt for a prix fixe menu to keep things simple.

72. Wall of Accomplishments

Make a creative retirement collage on the office’s wall or at your party. Include pictures of the retiree’s life, certificates of significant accomplishments, and any noteworthy milestones.

This makes a great talking point during parties. What better way to make the retiree feel honored after a lifetime of work?

73. We’ll Be Blue Without You

At this party, everything must be blue! Use blue table decor, streamers, and balloons. Clue people in on the theme with a giant “We’ll be blue without you!” sign.

Blue food is relatively easy to come by. Make a blueberry tart, use blue curacao in cocktails, or add butterfly pea flowers to iced tea for a royal hue.

74. Check Something off the Retiree’s Bucket List

If your retiree already has a bucket list, why not check something off it? Maybe they want to go sailing or shoot off fireworks. Explore their bucket list goals and turn one of those activities into a celebration!

This will require knowing the retiree well and potentially a higher budget depending on the activity. However, it’s the perfect way to start retirement on the right foot!

75. Patriotic Party

Patriotic Party

A patriotic theme is a great way to commemorate someone’s career, especially if they were in the military or worked for the government. Think Fourth of July decor, but any time of the year!

Get all your red, white, and blue banners and American flags. Watermelon stars and fruit salad flags are the perfect summer snacks. It’s an easy theme that is low-budget but appropriate for many careers.

76. Community Hall

Are you searching for a venue to host a big group? A community hall makes an excellent choice for a larger retirement party. They usually come with a kitchen, dining tables and chairs, and space for dancing or presentations. Expect to pay mid-range and by the hour.

77. Florida Theme

Are those retirees moving to Florida soon? While it’s a cliche, it’s often true! Play upon this silly idea with a Florida-themed party.

Pretty orange fruit displays can contribute to an Aperol spritz bar or mimosas. Set the vibe with pink flamingos, palm trees, and beach-inspired decorations. As a funny touch, you can have Florida-man news articles printed based on the retiree’s birthday and retirement day.

78. Fly Away With Me

Whether the retiree will travel, relocate, or just move on in life, “Fly away with me” is a pretty and unique theme. For hot air balloons, attach baskets to colorful balloons around the home. Each basket can double as a memory jar or bucket list basket.

Pastels and stripes work well with this theme, while clustered white balloons can give the appearance of clouds. Play crowd-pleasing music like Frank Sinatra’s “Come Fly With Me” and other classics.

79. Recess Theme

Recess Theme

Retirees can now enjoy break times forever…kind of like a forever recess! Celebrate this momentous occasion by recreating those childhood recesses.

An outdoor party in a park or backyard is the perfect setting–although you can always take it indoors for a rainy day recess. Lunchable-style snacks and some recess punch are low-budget but fun food. Consider including some games like a football toss or cornhole.

80. New Hobby Party

How will the retiree occupy their time now that work is done? Give them ideas! At this party, guests can suggest new hobbies by writing them down and adding them to a basket. Or, they can bring gifts such as games, craft kits, or a gift certificate for art classes.

A new hobby party can be a standalone theme or combined with potlucks, barbecues, and dinner parties.

81. Honey Do List

With all that extra time, your retiree can help out around the house! Poke fun at the retiree by having everyone create special requests for the retiree to do around the house. After all, what else will they do with their newfound free time?

Guests can post these requests on the wall for everyone to see. Maybe the retiree can “Finally clean out the garage” or “Take the grandkids to soccer practice.”  They may be done with their office life, but there’s plenty of work at home!

82. You’re Only Old Once

You’re Only Old Once is a Dr. Seuss book for obsolete children. You should definitely display the book so everyone can read it and smile at the cute references.

Colorful pastels dominate the book’s artwork and should be the color scheme. Pull from references in the book for food ideas like using Good & Plenty candies to represent medical pills and colorful potions served in glass bottles.

83. Garden Party

Garden Party

Have you been working on that garden? Show it off by hosting a fabulous retirement party.

Scatter seating around the garden so people can enjoy private conversations and set up a food table with a simple tablecloth and bouquets. Consider gifting an engraved rock to the retiree with their name and work years on it. They can find the perfect place to keep it in their garden.

84. Campsite

Take your retirement party to the great outdoors. A campsite is a beautiful venue on a sunny, cool day. They’re inexpensive to reserve, and many have built-in barbecues. Campsites with picnic tables make it easy to display food and beverages.

If your group likes fishing, grilling, or just chilling, campsites are a beautiful setting to celebrate.

85. Destination Vacation

Is the retiree planning a vacation or moving soon? If so, arrange the theme around the destination.

If they’re going to France, have a Parisian theme with French cheese and wine. If they’re moving to Mexico, have a taco bar with spicy margaritas. Plus, guests can bring practical gifts the retiree may need in this place.

86. Custom Mug Gift

People may retire from work, but they never retire from coffee! Give your retiree a custom mug as a retirement gift.

You can put a cute inside joke from work on the mug or the company logo with their years worked. It’s sure to put a smile on their face as they sip!

87. Fancy Slippers Gift

Fancy Slippers Gift

Retirement means more time in your PJs! So why not give the retiree a fancy pair of slippers to accompany their lounging attire? You can have a custom phrase like “officially retired” or their name.

88. Career Specific Themes

Honor the retiree by throwing a career-specific party! You’ll want the decor, the cake, and activities based on their job.

89. Rent a Skybox

For example, if they were an ophthalmologist, you can have a cake shaped like an eye and a DIY photo booth with funny glasses. If they were a pilot, you could have paper airplane garlands hanging from the ceiling.

Is the retiree a sports fan? If so, treat them to a skybox at one of their favorite games.

Skyboxes host a limited number of people, so choose those guests wisely. Skybox packages often include food and beverage, but you can always bring a retirement-themed cake and some champagne to make a toast!

90. May the Force Be With You

If your retiree is a Star Wars fan, give them an appropriately themed send-off. Invitations can emulate the Star Wars intro and start with “In a galaxy far, far away….”

Silver and black balloons and hanging stars can be the backdrop, with phrases to wish the retiree well in his future endeavors. Also, consider smashing a Darth Vadar piñata with lightsabers (aka fancy brooms).

91. Cornhole

Cornhole

Cornhole is an excellent addition to an outdoor retirement party. Your group can play in the backyard, at a campsite, or at a park.

Cornhole provides just enough movement and competition without having to break a sweat. To make things more exciting, have a cornhole tournament to see who the winner is.

92. Adios Amigo

Who doesn’t love a Mexican fiesta? Say adios to your coworker with this happy theme.

This party is all about Mexican food, so prep guacamole, salsa, and a 7-layer dip. Tres leches cake is a unique and delicious option. You can also play games like pin-the-sombrero on the retiree.

93. The End is Now

This end is now…what will the office do without you? This dark theme is excellent for all those post-apocalyptic fans. This theme could go in many directions depending on how you see the world ending.

For a zombie apocalypse, opt for a blood-spattered tablecloth and warning signs around the party. To create zombie hands in blood, fill plastic gloves with green water and use the frozen hands as ice in a large, red punch bowl.

94. The Office Theme

If you’ve seen the Office, you know how awkward work environments can get. Embrace this by throwing your retiree a Dunder Mifflin party.

Hang a simple, low-budget sign saying “IT IS YOUR RETIREMENT” and have half-blown balloons in dull colors decorating the place. Don’t forget to have some goldfish swim in blue-cheese dressing or a jar of Kevin’s M&Ms.

95. Zoom Bingo

Zoom Bingo

Virtual meetups can get a bit old after a while. If you’re meeting for a retirement celebration, it’s an occasion to spice it up!

Games provide a friendly social lubricant to help people relax and enjoy cocktails and conversation more. Plus, Bingo is an easy, free choice on Zoom. Everyone knows how to play, and it doesn’t require anything extra.

96. Virtual Gifts

With everything online these days, why not give a virtual retirement gift? It’s the perfect choice for an online party as well.

Virtual gifts can include gift certificates to online stores, entertainment subscriptions, or online fitness memberships. If the retiree is looking for new hobbies, you can give them an online class.

97. Who Am I? Game

Get the party started with a trip down memory lane. Each guest writes down one memory of the retiree. Then, the guest of honor reads each one aloud— guessing who said it. Alternatively, the crowd could guess who it was.

This game is entirely free and only requires some slips of paper and a jar. However, it’ll make the retiree feel special and bring up great conversation starters at the party.

98. Hire a Live Band

A live band provides the music and entertainment all in one! However, you’ll need some space to host. Consider a bigger venue like a farm or the office parking lot.

Make sure the guest of honor enjoys the band’s music– and maybe request some of their nostalgic favorites to make them smile.

99. Hire a Comedian

Hire A Comedian

How many retirement parties have their own comedian? This is a unique way to celebrate the retiree on their special day. It also makes for fun entertainment while everyone’s enjoying a potluck.

Give the comedian some insider info so they can roast the retiree. Also, consider leaving time for others to take the mic– making speeches or trying their hand at jokes.

100. Theme Park

You’re never too old for a theme park. Relive those youthful days by celebrating your retirement at a local theme park. Schedule time for rides, shows, and a communal meal.

Purchasing everyone’s tickets and food can get pricey. However, there are package deals. Or, you can leave it up to individuals to buy tickets but supply the food and drinks.

101. RV Party

Does your retiree enjoy RV travel? If so, create an RV party to celebrate their official retirement.

Find a scenic spot to park your RV; by a lake, campsite, or beach. Fill the ice chest with beverages and get the barbecue going. Ensure enough seating so guests can sit under the awning and enjoy some conversation and coolers.

102. Is it True?

Are you looking for retirement party games? This is a fun way to get the crowd chatting about the retiree.

During the Is It True? game, guests write one memory or fact about the retiree that may or may not be true. As the host reads them aloud, people can vote on their validity. The retiree will finally find out what everyone really thinks of them!

103. Mini-Golf

Mini Golf

Practice those putting skills! Take your retirement party to a mini-golf course. All you need to do is reserve the course and set aside tables for after-golf festivities.

This activity will require a medium budget. While mini-golf courses have their own food, I’d like to bring extra beverages and a cake for a celebratory feel.

104. Oh-FISH-ally Retired

Celebrate retirement with an under-the-sea party. A large banner saying “O-Fish-Ally Retired” will help people understand the theme.

Decorate the party with blue streamers, balloons, and bubble garlands. Food options could include calamari, shrimp cocktail, and crabcakes. Consider creating fish cutouts to use in a memory jar.

105. Retirement Questions Jenga

Jenga is a silly game that helps people relax and bond at a party. To make this Jenga special, write questions on the Jenga blocks.

As guests pull each one out successfully, they can answer retirement-related questions. Some ideas are “What will you miss most about the retiree?” or “What is your first memory of the retiree?”

106. Slow Down

Retirement is a time to slow down, so throw a party to let everyone know! Slow Down or speed limit signs and “Keep calm and carry on” sayings can be displayed around the party.

This relaxing theme can take place indoors or in a calm outdoor setting like a park or garden. Chillout music like Bossanova helps set the right vibe. Gifting the retiree something on-brand, like a book or journal will help them enjoy the art of slowing down.

107. Toasting to Retirement

Toasting to Retirement

Honor the retiree with a night of toasts dedicated to their special day! Of course, guests will need a drink in hand, so have cocktails, wine, and non-alcoholic options ready.

Toasts go well at a cocktail party and can happen at a bar or private venue. Encourage everyone to share their special memories, hopes, and thoughts on retirement. Cheers to a beautiful celebration!

108. Hire a Magician

How many people have hired a magician for their retirement party? While it’s uncommon, it’s a novel way to celebrate!

Hiring a magician will require a medium budget, but it will provide entertainment for all ages. Magicians pair well with a fortune teller party or a circus theme. Make sure to tell the magician it’s a retirement party so they can make more than just work disappear for the retiree!

109. DESSERTing Us Party

Retirements may be bittersweet, but this theme is all about the sweet portion! Celebrate the end of one’s working life by throwing a dessert party.

This twist on the classic potluck requires everyone to bring a dessert. These desserts can be seasonal pies, a retirement-themed cake, or cute retire-mints to freshen that breath.

110. Goodbye Themed Foods

Punny food can be included in many party themes, from career-specific parties to cocktails.

Early morning parties can include a we’ll miss you a latte, and desserts might be donut miss us too much! Or it sucks you’re leaving suckers. Make sure to put out cute, crafty signs to display each food item and make those guests smile.

111. Open When Cards

Open When Cards

With all the free time in retirement, it may bring up a lot of unexpected emotions. A thoughtful gift for the retiree is to create “Open When…” Cards.

You can make a variety yourself or include close friends and coworkers. This way, the retiree will have a card to “open when they feel lonely…start to miss work…or are overwhelmed with joy.”

112. Spa Day

Spa days are perfect for mothers who need some pampering. They’ve dedicated so much as a parent and at work and deserve to be celebrated. A spa day is a gift and a party all in one.

This option will be pricier, especially if you’re treating others. However, spa days are super relaxing and can include massages, pedicures, facials, and a lovely lounge in the hot tub.

113. Casino Night

Casino nights are a classic theme for parties. Playing various games can relieve pressure and allow people to mingle and drink at ease.

Casino nights can be pricey as you’ll need enough tables and space and possibly hire equipment and dealers. However, this party theme definitely gives off an air of celebration. Just don’t go all in with that retirement fund!

114. Au Revoir!

Give your retiree a French-themed farewell! Decorations should represent the colors of the French flag; red, white, and blue— but don’t forget to add black and white stripes and a faux Eiffel Tower.

A DIY photo booth can have a Paris backdrop with cheesy props like berets and striped scarves. After the obligatory photo session, guests can enjoy champagne and colorful macaroons.

With electronic picture frames, you can have several photos instead of just one. This makes an excellent gift for retirees who remember their work days fondly.

115. Electronic Picture Frame

Electronic Picture Frame

Choose from a variety of work photos from throughout the years. After you gift this, make sure to display it at the party so guests can enjoy it as well.

116. Forever Young Party

You might be retired, but you may always be young at heart! Have a throwback party to celebrate your youth. Have everyone dress like they would in their early 20s…which may be reminiscent of the 70s, 80s, or 90s.

Fill the place with colorful balloons and games that bring you back– perhaps connect four or cards. Play music that makes you feel young and gets everyone dancing!

117. Cruise Ship Theme

Many retirees love cruises. So why not bring the cruise ship to them?

A lot can be done with construction paper. Cutout anchors, lifesaving rings, and a large steering wheel to hang on the walls. On a large ship’s steering wheel, write “Headed in the right direction” and have everyone sign it.

118. Happy Trails Hike

If the retiree enjoys hiking, arrange a hiking trip in their honor. Getting outdoors does wonders for your health and can inspire a happy retirement.

This event is low-budget, but make sure to choose a suitable trail everyone can handle. Consider hiking to a picnic spot where a larger group of guests can be waiting as a surprise. There, you can enjoy cake, snacks, and refreshments.

119. Don’t Be Blue!

Don't Be Blue

Retirement is a happy occasion. Therefore, nothing blue is allowed at this cheerful party!

Guests should avoid wearing any blue– or they will have to donate to the feeling blue fund– ultimately to be given to the retiree. Decorate the party with absolutely every other color under the sun.  It sounds easy, but you’d be surprised how common blue really is.

120. Retirement Gift Basket

When struggling to think of one great gift, I opt for a useful basketful of smaller ones!

Think about what your retiree will need after retirement. Will they need a good book, a hat, or tasty treats? Fill all the items you can think of in a beautifully presented basket, and voila! You have yourself a personalized retirement survival pack.

121. Photo Cards

A beautiful way to say farewell is through photo cards. Instead of writing a traditional card, write a large message and take a photo with it. This way, the retiree can see your face and your note.

Photo cards are perfect for teachers. All their students can create a scrapbook with their photo cards, making the teacher feel loved in their last year.

122. Stitch & Bitch Party

Work is over, and it’s time to have fun with some new hobbies! If your retiree likes knitting, host a stitch and bitch in their honor.

This party’s premise is to chat or gossip while knitting up a storm. Even if guests are first-timers, include them in the festivities. It’s a low-key, inexpensive way to spend time with the retiree and reminisce about their workdays.

123. Coffee Break Party

Coffee Break Party

Throw your retiree their last coffee break party ever! This is a great theme to host at the office, but it can happen anywhere there’s coffee. Bring all your favorite coffee drinks from a local chain and set up the perfect coffee accompaniments; pastries, cookies, and sandwiches.

You can have a large chalkboard to announce the event and a card so guests can “espresso themselves” and write what they’ll miss most about the retiree.

124. Luncheon

Luncheons are the perfect daytime activity to celebrate retirement. They’re just as special as dinner parties but less expensive. You can rent out space at a restaurant or have a catering company to your office or home.

Make this luncheon special by adding some extra touches. Have a retirement bucket list, host a roast, or play the Who Is It? game.

125. Burn It! Bonfire

There’s nothing quite as ceremonious as burning things you no longer need. Ring in retirement by burning all those office documents and old uniforms you won’t be using anymore.

Plus, a bonfire is a great outdoor venue to host many people. Encourage others to bring beverage-filled coolers, barbecue, and some s’mores for dessert.

126. Emoji Guessing Game

At a retirement party, play an emoji guessing game. Use a large screen or projector to display an emoji based on the retiree’s future. Everyone can discuss and call out guesses.

The artist emoji might mean the retiree is starting painting classes, and the cowboy emoji might mean they’re taking a trip to the country. It’s an easy, free way to share the retiree’s future plans with the crowd.

127. Never or Ever Game

Never or Ever Game

How well do you know the retiree? The Never or Ever Game suggests past activities that the retiree may have done. For example, “Has the retiree ever been skinny-dipping?”

Guests can guess if they have done that before. If not, would they ever? The guest of honor can get a kick out of what everyone truly thinks of them.

128. Pin the Next Destination

Retirement is the perfect time to travel the world! But where should retired people start?

As an interactive decoration, hang up a map of your country or the world. Guests can place a pin on their recommended travel destinations along with notes. However, put the map over a corkboard or use pins that won’t leave holes in your walls!

129. Photo Caption Contest

For the retiree’s special day, create a wall of their working days. Include pictures of them in the office or during vacation time with the family.

However, also provide post-it notes and pens, encouraging guests to write their own captions. They can be funny, offbeat, or sentimental. Whatever they choose, everyone can enjoy reading the captions.

130. No More Mondays!

What do you call a person who is happy on Mondays? Retired. Throw them a No More Mondays party on the retirees’ last week.

Hang a “NO MORE MONDAYS” banner and smash an alarm clock piñata. This party makes for a great surprise party theme, too— send the retiree to lunch and throw them a party on their return.

131. Guessing Guests!

Guessing Guests

Large retirement parties often combine different people from your life; coworkers, family, and friends. The Guessing Guests game is a great way to get them talking to one another.

Stick post-it notes on everyone’s back with a well-known celebrity on it. The goal is to guess who you are by walking around and asking questions about yourself. But be careful not to reveal too much about others’ identities!

132. Fish Bowl Game

Fish Bowl is a fun game for all types of gatherings! Everyone writes nouns on slips of paper and adds them to a bowl. For a retirement party, make the words related to the retiree or their job.

Partygoers separate into two teams. First, teams try to guess as many words as possible through verbal descriptions. This is followed by a round of one-word clues and then charades.

133. To-Do List Decor

Retirement means a stop to the endless work to-do lists. As a joke, include a giant to-do list of everyday things retirees did in their careers. Guests can add more items to it throughout the festivities.

At the end of the party, the retiree lights the to-do list on fire as a ceremonious end to their work tasks. It’s a silly and free activity, but exercise fire caution in the process!

134. Retirement Cake

Retirement cakes are an essential centerpiece at the party. While a “Happy Retirement” cake will do, why not get creative?

Use your theme or the retiree’s job role to create a unique cake. For example, if your retiree was an artist, create a Picasso-style painting on the front. If they were a cashier, have a professional make a cash register cake.

135. Contact Book

Contact Book

Retiring from work also means saying goodbye to all coworkers. Whether the colleagues were close friends or irritated each other, the retiree may want their contact info. For this reason, contact books make lovely retirement gifts.

Make sure to give this gift before the retiree’s last day so they can gather those precious contacts.

136. Retirement Themed Playlist

Music is a crucial part of any party. It provides the backdrop to conversations and can even inspire some dancing.

For a retirement party, make a special playlist to remind people of the occasion. Think of anything related to working or taking a break. “Schools Out for Summer” and “It’s Been a Hard Day’s Night” are great choices.

137. Ode to Retiree

A customized song is a unique gift for your retiree. Companies like Songfinch and Songlorious make personalized songs based on the information you give. Think of all the details you’d like included, and they’ll create country, rock, or pop music just for you!

Surprise the retiree on the way home from work or at their retirement party by playing it aloud. They’ll be shocked to receive such a heartwarming, fun gift!

138. Retirement Newspaper

Are you hoping to surprise your retiree? Replace the morning paper with a personalized retirement newspaper!

It can be chock full of news about the retiree, including stories from coworkers, a timeline of accomplishments, photos, and farewell letters. A retirement newspaper is a beautiful way to surprise someone and capture that historical moment.

139. Start a Book Club

Start A Book Club

With newfound free time, why not start a book club? The intention will be to gather and discuss a book regularly. However, the first meeting can be a retirement party with extra wine and nibbles.

Great books to read after retirement include The Art of Slowing Down, The Joy of Not Working, and What Will I Do All Day?

140. Admit or Drink Game

Have you been good or bad at work? This game has you confessing your worst work sins– or drinking. It’s a great choice to play with coworkers at a happy hour party or online.

Guests can take turns asking the group questions such as “Have you faked a sickness to get out of work? What did you do instead? If someone doesn’t want to confess, they can always drink. Luckily, the retiree won’t have to worry about getting in trouble!

141. The Final Happy Hour

What better way to cheers to retirement than one final happy hour? It’s a low to medium-budget activity, depending on how many rounds everyone buys.

However, there are several venues to choose from! With a large crowd, you should reserve a table ahead of time and buy some appetizers for the group to share. Everyone can spend time reminiscing about their favorite work memories over some delicious cocktails and snacks.

142. Memory Balloons

Instead of decorating with regular balloons, fill them with happy memories! Coworkers can write cute messages, place them inside and inflate the balloon.

Memory balloons are best made the night before your coworker’s final day. They can arrive to find a room full of balloons, popping them to read special notes throughout their last day.

143. School’s Out!

School's Out

Do you remember that feeling at the end of each school year? Hopefully, that’s how you’ll feel at your retirement party!

Recreate the end-of-school-year festivities with classroom decor like chalkboard signs and an apple centerpiece. You can also use a whiteboard to play fun games like Pictionary or hangman. This party can be hosted in the classroom if allowed or at home.

144. Office Softball Game

Retirement is like hitting a home run in your career. Why not play an actual softball game with the office? Break into teams and find your closest baseball field.

Have a barbecue and drinks prepared for a post-game feast. Softball is a fun, inexpensive way to have fun with your colleagues– and exercise teamwork– one last time.

145. A Bright Future

Here’s to a bright future! With this retirement theme, you’ll be celebrating with bright colors. Think neon glow sticks and bright clothing.

Gummy worms and brightly frosted cupcakes will light up the food table. Use melon liquor or blue curacao to create colorful cocktails. If this theme is at night, you can include some glow-in-the-dark decor and neon lights signs.

146. Seasonal Theme

Embrace the current season for your retirement party. Pull from the nature around you to create decor and opt for in-season foods.

Decorate your table with fallen leaves, a pumpkin, and yummy autumn snacks if it’s fall. If it’s summer, make some fresh lemonade and create a watermelon cake as your centerpiece.

147. Off the Clock!

Off the Clock

Retirement means you are officially off the clock! For this creative theme, get a clock cake. However, have the numbers falling off their respective spots. Alternatively, serve numbered cupcakes on a circular plate, but mix up the numbers.

Piñatas are great for many parties, but this one especially. Have everyone attempt to break the clock piñata, freeing the retiree from strict schedules.

148. Lawn Bowls

Lawn bowls is a sport where people roll balls, stopping close to a smaller ball. It’s a fabulous sport to accompany a retirement party. It doesn’t require much physical exertion but gets people outside and socializing.

You’ll need a lawn bowl set and an outdoor space to play. These balls can be expensive, but you’ll be able to use them forever– and can even gift them to the retiree. If your parents have expressed interest in lawn bowls, buy them some for an outdoor retirement party.

149. Art Gallery

Does the retiree appreciate art? If so, host a sophisticated retirement party at a local art gallery.

It can be a simple affair with wine, finger foods, and cake because the main attraction will be wandering about and making conversation over art pieces. However, consider that art galleries can be expensive to rent depending on location and prestige.

150. Customized Luggage

Are your parents planning to travel after retirement? Get them a beautiful suitcase or carry-on piece with their initials printed on the front.

You should also consider personalized luggage tags. Opt for wood or leather and have the retiree’s contact information engraved on it.
